WHY DID GORDON WRITE THIS BOOK?

Where do goofy ideas begin? Gordon can’t remember, although if you are insistent he will give you a yarn to satisfy you. There is a frail Burgett family tree that his brothers, sister, and one ex-wife add to, sort of verify, and wonder about. Like most, he never asked his folks much about their past, then he got curious after they died. But it was too late since both were only children so aunts, uncles, and the rest didn’t exist. Even the name is borrowed since his father’s father was the quiet get of an unmarried couple. It’s said the name was given to him by the doctor who presided at his birth—and may have adopted him, in Topeka, Kansas. Rumor is that his original name may have been Bacon. And that’s it. It simply made sense to Gordon that family trees were growing the wrong direction—into the ground! And why couldn’t they continue to grow in a real, human sense through the interchangeability of a website well structured and directed into as far in the future as the family wished. Then they could just keep digging for real roots to add to the bottom of the tree.

Gordon first put this idea on paper in 2005 but it was behind three other books so it was visited once or twice a year, tweaked or expanded, and it waited patiently until he had finished Niche Publishing. It made more sense in 2008 than it did, in skeletal form, in 2005, so here it is: Your Living Family Tree! Gordon’s a historian by trade and training. This book is neither niche publishing nor history, except in the most progressive futuristic sense. But it is a grand (and modest) idea that could surely bring families together and spread pride and accomplishment a long way, temporally and geographically, thanks to digital magic.
