CHEAT SHEET
YOUR LIVING FAMILY TREE

1. There must be a thousand books about genealogy.
Why do we need another? And why would my listeners care?
2. You’re saying that people now have the “family
tree” growing the wrong way? Don’t the roots grow into the ground, and isn’t
that where they’re digging?
3. Are you saying that we must reinvent the family
tree? Why?
4. And why did it take until 2008 for what, maybe a
million, genealogists to discover they are doing it wrong?
5. But you’re not even a genealogist, are you,
Gordon? Why should they, or anybody, pay attention to you?
6. I can see the idea of a website as a trunk with
all of the digital memories preserved there, but who keeps it all together and
functioning for the next 10, or 100, or as you say
1000 years?
7. Is there any budget involved? Who will pay the
bills?
8. Won’t this start taking up so much digital space
that it will become prohibitively expensive?
9. And what will happen to the tree as the technology
changes, as it has already in just 20 or so years? Remember floppy disks?
10. I like the idea but what’s the biggest initial
obstacle to getting it up and going? Are there other major obstacles in the
future?
11. What about the family members who don’t have a
computer? Or just don’t want to take part, are they forced to? Who makes those
decisions?
12. What if there are things on the living family
tree you don’t want shared with others? Or information you don’t want available
in your lifetime?
13. It’s fine that you’re
sharing this idea, what what’s in this for you, beyond the book?
14. Can you walk me through a fully functioning
“living family tree,” Gordon? How would it affect me? What would you want me to
do?
15. Your book has 17 different kinds of information
that might be gathered? Can you explain that? And is that it—what if the family
wants to go a completely different direction?
16. What if everybody in the family loves the idea
but nobody wants to set it up or direct it! Can you hire that out to someone
else to do?
17. How did this idea occur to you? And what prompted
you to put it into a book? What if nobody cared?
18. Can you think of any families that shouldn’t
create their own “living family tree”?
